Abstract

This study was conducted to determine primary school fifth grade students’ mental skill levels in listening comprehension. A “Listening Comprehension Test” was developed by the researcher so that the students’ level of mental skills in listening comprehension could be determined. The test was designed to include the listening comprehension acquisitions covered in the 5th Grade listening domain of the Turkish course curriculum. The research population consisted of a total of 750 5th grade primary school students, who were determined through random element of sampling, in the central province of Eskisehir in 2010-2011. The research data vi was collected by the researchers. The activities were conducted in a period of two lesson hours in the primary schools included in the study. The collected data were analyzed in terms of mental skills in parallel to the research aim. Therefore, the items were categorized according to the mental processes related to the corresponding acquisitions and a total of 27 acquisitions were gathered under 11 mental skills. Each of the mental skills measured comprised a sub-problem of the research. Descriptive statistics data on the responses to the test items was used to make interpretations. These findings showed that the mean of the mental skill levels of primary school 5th grade students in listening comprehension was .651. Also, the means determined in the analyses varied depending on the mental skills. The students had a high level of mental skills in listening comprehension in terms of building semantic relationships meaning configuration through visuals, discrimination and analysis. They had a moderate level of achievement in the mental skills of following the instructions and making predictions in listening comprehension test. Finally, they had a low level of mental skills in listening comprehension in terms of problem solving, inquiry and comparison.
