Abstract

Molokai lies in the middle of the Hawaiian archipelago. Its northern peninsula, Kalaupapa, is separated from the rest of the island by the world's highest sea cliffs. It is, explains an on-screen inscription, “a natural prison”. From 1866, Kalaupapa served as a leper colony. By 1969, thanks to the advent of sulphate drugs in the late 1940s, its inhabitants were all free to leave. Most chose to stay—the blustery, tropical headland had become their home; besides, many feared prejudice when people saw the tell-tale disfigurement wrought by leprosy. Kalaupapa Heaven is the moving story of this extraordinary community. The diminutive Catherine Puahala, her nose pushed to the side, her right eye sunken, her hands truncated, recalls how she was forbidden from touching her baby—a common theme in the film. “Sometimes” she says softly “fate plays a game with us”.
