Abstract

Abstract The umbilical vein catheter technique is a quantitative method ta evaluate liver size in the early newborn infant. This technique can be used when abdominal palpation and radiographs are unrewarding in the presence of ascites or abdominal wall edema, in differentiating hepatomegaly from other abdominal organomegaly, and in differentiating congestive heart failure with hepatomegaly from other causes of respiratory distress in the neonate which may clinically or radiographically mimic each other. The therapeutic success or failure of certain conditions producing liver enlargement can also be expressed by a change in liver size determined by the umbilical vein catheter technique.
