Abstract

Objectives: over 10% of the world population is affected by various kinds of liver diseases. Liver diseases are serious health-threaten problems worldwide, especially in Asian region. Chinese herbal medicines have been used to treat various liver diseases for several centuries in clinical setting. The aim of the study is to clarify whether anti-oxidative effect is associate with Chinese medicines treatment of liver diseases or not. Methodology: using systematic review and pharmacological technologies, we conducted series studies on anti-oxidative effects of several Chinese medicines in rats with liver damage models. Results: various pathological factors damaged liver tissues by increase reactive oxygen (ROS), nitrogen species (RNS) and peroxidation of lipids. We tested effects of Chinese medicinal herbs on acute and chronic liver diseases and liver cancer in rats and mice models and found anti-oxidative effect is one of therapeutic effects. Conclusion: The results from the literatures review to ours original studies revealed anti-oxidative effect of Chinese medicines is a basic treatment for various liver diseases. Targeting specific etiological or pathological factor is one of therapeutic strategies in liver diseases. It is warrant for further study underlying mechanism of the anti-oxidative effect of the Chinese medicines in liver diseases in the future.
