Abstract
This chapter, which examines the relationship between literary theory and the secret police through an analysis of the concept of estrangement, explores the works of Viktor Shklovsky and Nicolae Steinhardt and discusses secret police interrogation and reeducation practices. It suggests that artistic estrangement was gradually politicized and radically modified through its entanglements with secret police estrangement, and also describes the impact of secret police practices and files on both literary theory and first-person narratives.
