Abstract

Two species of Thysanoptera,Liothrips vaneeckei Priesner andXylaplothrips subterraneus J. C. Crawford, were found causing severe damage to lily bulbs in the Netherlands (fig. 1).X. subterraneus was found only once, associated withL. vaneeckei, in a sample of bulbs grown in a glasshouse at Wageningen. The thrips were controlled by submerging the bulbs for 15 mins. in 100 ml 25% parathion in 100 1 of water, with spreader. Maximum effect was obtained when the bulbs were stored in a heated room for one or two days after treatment.
