Abstract
Starting with the demands a structure has to fulfil, it is shown how joining technology can contribute towards meeting these requirements. The interdependency between joining technology, material and structural design is also highlighted. With the help of examples, it is illustrated how improvements in the particular joining technology, design optimisation, the use of superior materials in conjunction with a suitable joining technology, and the use of hybrid joining technologies can contribute towards improving the properties of a structure and thus achieve weight savings.
