Abstract

Outdoor education programs are ideal for meeting the special needs of gifted students. They provide numerous experiential activities that challenge students to use observation as well as higher level thinking skills. Also, such programs can encourage students to research and design projects based on individual needs and interests. A comment may be made, however, that the above mentioned experiences are appropriate for all students. The problem, then, is one of designing an outdoor education program that is suited for gifted students. This article will describe the summer enrichment program at Mount Saint Mary's College and how language arts skills were integrated with outdoor education to produce a qualitatively different program to meet the needs of gifted students.
