Abstract

This article explores the forces behind the transformation of traditional settlements in southwest Saudi Arabia. It provides a synopsis of the present circumstances of such settlements, analyzes issues relevant to their deterioration, evaluates current policies and developments, and suggests possible courses of action. A serious look at such settlements would be a useful tool for fostering a new attitude toward planning practices in Saudi Arabia. Although they are in many ways inadequate to modern needs, they represent a cultural archetype containing answers to many questions that have been bypassed in the country's rush to adopt foreign planning models and prototypes.
