Abstract

A beam containing N 2 in long-lived states was generated by means of a dc discharge at the nozzle. One of the metastable beam components was N 2 (A′ 5Σ + g). This species was detected by means of pulsed laser excitation in the N 2 (C″ 5Π u←A′ 5Σ + g) 2-1 band, folowed by 2-0 band fluorescence. The lifetime of the C″, ν = 2 level was measured to be 4.73 ± 0.1 μs.
