Abstract
AbstractHealthcare delivery systems have progressively been concentrated on achievement of the six domains of quality (safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable), with efforts dedicated to employing continuous quality improvement activities to assess whether changes implemented in structure and process positively impacted (or not) on outcome. The concept of quality improvement has been applied in different surgical and nonsurgical disciplines, yet barriers and misinterpretations impair its widespread use. Surgeons treating patients with cleft lip and/or cleft palate should also embrace on this quality improvement journey toward excellence of outcome, in line with the motto of this book. This chapter then focuses on quality improvement features that would be interesting and pertinent to surgeons. Quality improvement projects and research studies are differentiated. The authors’ workflows and interpretations of quality improvement, problem-solving approach, and evidence-based practice principles and tools are provided to assist surgeons in the challenging task of deciphering the quality improvement puzzle and apply it accordingly.KeywordsQuality improvementProblem-solving approachEvidence-based practiceCleft
