Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the level of students’ mathematical thinking ability in the transition process from arithmetic to algebraic thinking based on Shafer and Foster. The subjects of this study were 6 8th grade students from SMPN 8 Malang and MTsN 1 Malang. The results showed that the level of mathematical thinking skills in the transition process from arithmetic to algebraic thinking based on Shafer and Foster with a tendency for a very good and good transition period reaches level III mathematical thinking ability by fulfilling all level I indicators (reproduction), level II (connection), and level III (analysis). The level of mathematical thinking skills in the transition process from arithmetic to algebraic thinking based on Shafer and Foster with a tendency that the transition period is not good to reach level II mathematical thinking ability by fulfilling all indicators level I (reproduction) and level II (connection), and does not meet one of the level III indicators (analysis).
