Abstract
A 67-year-old woman reported at our center for dental treatment. Clinical examination revealed homogeneous white plaque on the left oral mucosa and the left border of the tongue, adjacent to amalgam fillings. The lesions measured approximately 1.5 cm at the level of the occlusal plane of the occluding molars and 2 cm on the border of the tongue. The diagnostic hypothesis was lichenoid reaction to amalgam, and the amalgam restorations were replaced by ceramic onlays. After 1 month, there was a reduction in the size and severity of the lesion only on the left side of the oral mucosa. Hence excisional biopsy on the surface of the tongue was performed. Histopathologic analysis revealed hyperkeratosis and acanthosis with moderate epithelial dysplasia compatible with leukoplakia. A review conducted after 1 month showed complete healing. Follow-up with exfoliative cytology examination of the tongue was instituted.
