The study included an incidence analysis based on data from 184 countries and an epidemiological analysis based on 54 countries with detailed records of age, sex, and subtype of leukaemia. The researchers studied some interesting aspects of global leukaemia epidemiology, such as the burden from leukaemia subtypes in different populations. Major disparities between countries and continents were highlighted, which raises questions regarding aetiological regional factors that can contribute to neoplasm development. The study also provided information about the lack of resources in lower Human Development Index (HDI) countries, which has contributed to the underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis of patients with leukaemia. 1 Miranda-Filho A Piñeros M Ferlay JF Soerjomataram I Monnereau A Bray F Epidemiological patterns of leukaemia in 184 countries: a population-based study. The observed bimodal pattern could be due to different risk factors affecting different ages, and might include a genetic component. Full-Text PDF
