SummaryThe touristic development of Senegal follows the well-known pattern of Christaller who emphasized that the trend of touristic movement is always toward more remote peripheries.Senegal became a tourist destination about twelve years ago (1976) with the inclusion of Africa in the then-expanding international air charter network. In 1988 international tourists comprise approximately 86 percent of the tourist trade and 94 percent of the international bednights. The coastal areas though small in size, about 500 square kilometres, are the primary centres that cater to visitors in search of the three S's (sun, sand and sea)…and who are not interested in a fourth, safaris, although the country does offer that possibility.The government of Senegal implemented a policy to attract the affluent international clientele, but the spatial orientation on narrow strips of coastal beaches has created tourist “ghettos” filled with visitors.
