Abstract

In France, lung cancer induces more than 27,000 related deaths each year. The mean age at diagnosis was 66 years in men and 65 years in women. Lung cancer is rare in young patients under 40 and the incidence in France is around 3 to 4%. Few data are available in this population. Many studies suggested that the disease may represent a specific entity in these young subjects, or at least, is associated with specific characteristics: female over-representation predominance of adenocarcinoma, and advanced stage at diagnosis. Some studies show that young patients with lung cancer have a higher rate of family cancers history and a low educational level. The search for drug-targetable mutations showed in most studies that young patients exhibit a high mutation rate, especially for EGFR and EML4 ALK. It’s mandatory to define the molecular profile of lung tumors, especially in this young population in order to adapt the treatment. In contrast, the question of prognosis is highly controversial.
