Abstract

Abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The effect of abdominal obesity on myocardial function in young obese patients remains unknown. To assess the influence of obesity on left ventricular function, 50 obese asymptomatic patients (mean body mass index (BMI) 35.8 ± 4.2 kg/m 2 and mean age 39.2 ± 2.4 years) without evidence of heart disease were evaluated by echocardiography. Results showed that diastolic dysfunction was present in 21 (42%) of patients. Diastolic dysfunction was more common among female sex (68.18%) compared to male (50.17%). The mean left ventricular mass index was (103 ± 22 g/m 2 ). In conclusion, Diastolic dysfunction might be an early indicator of cardiac involvement in obesity.
