Abstract

abstract This paper explores the career trajectories of young people aged 16‐19 years who were ‘looked after’ by local authority social service departments. This will include a discussion of four substantive areas, first of all the educational attainment of young people at the minimum school‐leaving age; second the perceptions of ‘looked after’ young people of their educational experiences; third, young people's further education, employment and training routes and, finally, some of the influences connected with their career trajectories, as well as policy and practice recommendations. The paper is based substantially upon three ‘leaving care’ research studies carried out at the University of Leeds (Stein and Carey, 1986; Stein, 1990; Biehal et al., 1992). Table I presents a summary of these studies.
