Abstract
Background: Insufficient physical activity is known to increase the risks for obesity and metabolic disease. There is also evidence for adverse effects on attention, mental health and social skills. Despite this, physical education in primary schools in Australia has declined over recent years. A key curriculum outcome for mid-upper primary school children is competency in multiplication, the learning of which is often found to be challenging. In this study, therefore, we investigated the effect of combining aerobic physical activity with a standard classroom approach to the teaching of multiplication tables (MTs).
