Abstract

This paper looks at the role of drag in professional wrestling in Mexico. Exoticos are professional wrestlers who adopt a flamboyantly effeminate style when they fight. One interpretation of the `meaning' of professional wrestling in Mexico is that it functions as a theater of agonistic machismo. In that context, the success of exoticos in (at least sometimes) un-manning their opponents acts as a dramatic disruption of the equation of masculinity, penetration and dominance.
