Abstract

SummaryReporting their own results, the authors discuss the surgical treatment of hypertension in cases of pheochromocytoma, of urologic hypertension and of essential (and malignant) hypertension. The discovery of a pheochromocytoma urges for surgical treatment. A ease with complete cure maintained after 17 years is reported. The surgical treatment of urologic hypertension secondary to unilateral renal disease sometimes gives excellent results. Some cases which support this are briefly reported. It is therefore essential, although the surgical indications are infrequent, to perform an urologic exploration in every case of permanent hypertension. Some cases of essential (and malignant) hypertension can gain much benefit out of surgery. The selection of patients, which is often a difficult problem, is of prime importance. The suitable cases do not seem to he very frequent. Attention is called to the necessity of postponing the second intervention until the patient has completely recovered from the first operation.
