Abstract
Jacques Proust : Protestantism in the «encyclopédie ». Although many Encyclopédie articles, mostly in the fields of politics and philosophy, were drawn from Protestant sources, the number of Protestants who contributed as such was comparatively small. The four discussed in this article are Bottens, Formey, Romilly, Jaucourt. The first is a good example of the radical trend that led Voltaire to believe that Calvin's Geneva had turned Deist. Formey and Romilly seem more orthodox, but their contribution on religious matters is too slight to be significant. Jaucourt, on the contrary, whose collaboration was extensive, was the epitome of those French Protestants who, living in their native country, were able to maintain and express their faith — sometimes at their own risk.
