Abstract

Comecon Faces the Test of Perestroïka, by Pascal Lorot In the light of current economie reforms in Eastern Europe, the Commission for Mutual Economie Assistance (Comecon) is undergoing an intensive reexamination and overhaul. There is consensus among the participating countries on the need to reform of the organisation. But opinions differ as to the changes to be made. In fact certain countries are in favour of eliminating it altogether. In the meantime, fundamental decisions were made during the last Council meeting in Sofia in early January concerning inter-Comecon payments arrangements, which, if ratified, will benefit principally the Soviet Union.
