Abstract
The growth of Physical Education and Sport in France during the Inter War period is closely linked to the innovations of the City of Lyon. Edouard Herriot, mayor of the City from 1905 onwards, André Latarjet one of the best doctors with an international reputation, and Director of the “Cours supérieur d’éducation physique” founded by Georges Demeny in 1903, and Eugène Fortunet, an unknown and discreet teacher of Physical Education, are the main authors of this union of Politics, Science and Peda¬ gogy. The building of the Stadium at Gerland, the experiences of health schools, the youth festivals and the creation of the Physical Education Regional Institute are the main achievements of a municipal policy for Sport and Physical Education. Many of these innovations are later to inspire the Front Popular with Jean Zay and Leo Lagrange. But concern for healthcare and child protection are guided by a eugenic policy (for race preservation ) which give these innovations an ambiguous character.
