Abstract

Abstract The dependence of lattice constants of TmSe on the nonstoichiometry and the corresponding assignment of mixed valence has been a central point of discussion. In this paper we present evidence for the existence of additional TmSe phases (with NaCl-structure) and larger lattice constants. The phase relationships are discussed and a defect structure is suggested which would be consistent with prevailing Tm 3+ contributions in these phases. The results support the thermodynamic metastability of TmSe and the existence of a large (metastable) homogeneity range 0.88⩽Tm/Se⩽1.04.
