Abstract
High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) cable systems promise a number of special opportunities in term of their high current carrying capacity, low electrical losses, compact overall dimensions, low weight, and reduced environmental impact. This paper reports the latest developments on the HTS cable system prototypes in Europe and in USA. In particular, a detailed up-date on the development stage of the application-focused HTSC projects in progress within Pirelli Cables and Systems will be provided. These projects are aimed towards the technical feasibility demonstration of HTS technology for application at medium and extra high voltage for both “warm dielectric” and “cold dielectric” cable systems. Particular attention will be devoted to the Pirelli-EPRI-DoE program for the feasibility evaluation of an HTS pipe-type retrofit cable. The program was successfully concluded in January 1999 with the demonstration of a 50m 400MVA 115kV pipe-type HTS cable system capable of carrying 2kA rms a.c. Details on the final high voltage tests and the a.c. losses measurements will be reported.
