Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of the monomethoxides of Ca, Sr, and Ba (MOCH 3) are described. The production scheme used a metal vapor flow reactor in which the appropriate metal vapor was mixed with methylnitrite (CH 3ONO) to produce the metal methoxides. Chemiluminescence spectra from these reactions were observed. Features due the metal oxide and monomethoxide were assigned. Dynamical aspects of these reactions are discussed. Laser excitation spectra were obtained for CaOCH 3, CaOCD 3, SrOCH 3, and SrOCD 3, using a pulsed dye laser. Vibrational features of the A ̃ 2E- X ̃ 2A 1 and B ̃ 2A 1- X ̃ 2A 1 were observed and assigned for all of the molecules. A summary of frequencies is given. The nature of the bonding and structural considerations of the monomethoxides are described in terms of a localized ionic bonding model which was used previously on the isoelectronic monohydroxides and monohalides of the alkaline earths.
