Abstract

A large-bore arteriovenous shunt for use in chronic hemodialysis and extracorporeal renal transplantation was used on nine patients. The cannula and tubing design minimize turbulence and clotting and provide flow sufficient to perfuse an exteriorized human kidney. The longest implantation to date is 17 months.
