Abstract

Current APL file systems force explicit iteration on each filed item and are difficult to use. A file system in which files are addressed as APL variables is described. It is made up of four components, each useful in its own right. Two have already been implemented: enclosed arrays and the shared variable processor. Two are proposed in the paper: storage outside the workspace of large enclosed values, and a simple auxiliary processor to store by name, and later initialize, values of variables shared with it.
