Abstract

A pilot study on laparoscopic female sterilization has been conducted in Assiut, a largely rural area in Upper Egypt. The aim was to search for possibilities to increase the acceptability of the procedure and also to establish criteria for patient selection. This preliminary report is based on the first one hundred cases. Suggestions for improving the acceptability of the procedure by increasing its simplicity, safety and reliability are presented. The formula for eligibility for sterilization in developing communities has to take into consideration, apart from the patient's age and the number of living children, such factors as the stability of marriage, the sex of the living children and the appalling child mortality rate. Patients frustrated with their experience with contraceptive methods and patients in need of another minor operative procedure constituted two important target groups for sterilization.
