Abstract

Maize breeding for higher iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) concentrations in grain has been proposed as a sustainable strategy for reducing Fe and Zn deficiency in humans (Mason and D’Croz- Mason, 2002; Welch and Graham, 2002; Brkic et al., 2003). One constraint that maize breeder encounter is that grain Fe and Zn concentrations could be unfavorable associated with grain yield. Furthermore, quantities of micronutrients in grain are influenced by numerous complex factors such as genotypes, soil properties, environmental conditions and nutrient interactions (House, 1999). For better understanding of Fe and Zn density in grain, it is important to find out also the relations for concentrations of these minerals in the whole plant-soil system, including mineral concentrations in soil and leaf. The objective of this study was to examine relationships for Fe and Zn concentrations between leaf and grain of 28 maize genotypes grown at two sites differing in Fe and Zn concentrations of soil.
