Abstract

This work is the result of sociolinguistic research carried out in the summer of 2000 in Ailigandi, one of the Kuna Yala Islands (Panama). The research was conducted in collaboration with CISAI/Siena continuing the work begun by other researchers. This is a quantitative study of a classic Labovian matrix about some linguistic variables in the Kuna language. The purpose is to verify how the sonorization, in the class of occlusives is also correlated in Kuna to sociolinguistic parameters such as the speakers' age and sex. The kind of linguistic context in which such phenomenon recurs and the kind of hierarchy in the process of weakening among the three considered occlusive articulations: /p/ /t/ /k/ are considered. This quantitative research has permitted to prove how also in a small linguistic community phonological variability is in continuous evolution and linked to sociolinguistic parameters such as gender and age
