Abstract

As the title suggests, this paper has a double dimension, theoretical and applied. On the one hand, we attempt to review the state of the art of research into French-Spanish legal and economic translation from a theoretical and didactic point of view. On the other hand, our aim is to propose a methodological approach to the teaching of legal translation focused on a study of the difficulties encountered in the French-Spanish translation of a specific text type, the work contract. The approach includes different tasks to be exploited in the translation classroom. In order to set this proposal in context and define its scope, we have divided the article into six chapters and a conclusion. In the initial sections we define the object of study from a didactic standpoint, followed by a description of the main features displayed by legal discourse in French and Spanish, as well as an analysis and practical solving of the major difficulties found in the original text. Then, we lay down translation equivalents and discuss evaluation issues, aspects which will be useful for a structured proposal of tasks. Our conclusion is that these tasks are intended to check whether the students are able to justify their translation options, and to present an acceptable translated text.
