Abstract
Rhetoric is not limited to knowledge of the rules and procedures belonging to human speech. It assumes principles as well as forms. Accordingly, it has larger aims concerning the ends of human action. It supposes thinking and choices about wisdom. The stages of the dialogue between rhetoric and wisdom include Ancient Greece, Rome, and the Middle Ages. The questions posed address the connections between rhetoric and philosophy, rhetoric and theology, human speech and love of God.
