Abstract

The paper presents some results of a research project on the pronominal use of usted in three municipalities of the Colombian department of Antioquia: 1) the city of Medellin (urban zone), 2) Carmen de Viboral (semi-rural area), and 3) Andes (rural area). The population studied was made up of respondents aged 13 to 34, and the social variable for the study was the informants' place of residence (urban, semi-rural, or rural zone). To carry out this study, the 1940 informants participating in the study were given a questionnaire that included different types of interactions. Statistics show that in the great majority of interpersonal relations in Andes, usted is used more often than in Carmen de Viboral, and that in the latter municipality, the use of usted is more common than in Medellin.
