Abstract

The information on Brazilian rabbit production is rare and partial even if the Latin origin of the population induces good development conditions for an important rabbit production. In the 60's, export-oriented angora rabbit farrns were created. Then, at the beginning of the 70's, the first rabbit meat farms were developed with very extensive rnanagement methods. After a crisis, at the beginning of the 80's, the Brazilian rabbit production decreased before the renewed success of the last years. The Brazilian rabbit production has 3 components the industrial segment, with some of the largest rabbit farms in the world, represents 15 % of the whole meat production ; the rational segment, constituted of 100-200 does rabbit farms, located mainly closeness of the industrial ones, represents 65 % of the whole production ; finally, the rabbit rural production, which is not very developed (20 % of the production), in the south of the country. The main part of the Brazilian rabbit production is located in the South-East of Brazil because of the favourable climate and of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro's important consumption markets. Regarding performances, the number of kindlings/doe/year is 5 to 7 because of the very extensive rhythrns of breeding. The number of commercialised rabbits/litter is about 4-5, due to the high mortality during fattening. Sorne rabbit slaughtering plants exist in Brazil close to the industrial farms, able to slaughter between 7.500 to 40.000 rabbits/week. The rabbits are sold mainly in the South-East cities where a part of the population is of ltalian origin. Globally, the Brazilian rabbit meat production can be evaluated at 12.000 tons/year.
