Abstract

A novel Mg alloy (Mg-10Dy-0.7La) was reported to have an excellent combination of corrosion and mechanical properties at room temperature. For its widespread applicability, particularly in the automotive sector, high-temperature corrosion investigation in cooling media is required. A combination of immersion test, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance measurements were utilized to evaluate the corrosion behavior at different temperatures under ethylene glycol. The results suggested that Mg-10Dy-0.7La alloy has considerably enhanced corrosion resistance than AZ91 Mg alloy. This was attributed to higher activation energy and enhanced concentration of oxides (Dy2O3, La2O3, MgO and MgCO3) in former than that of latter.
