Is Word Adoption a Grassroots Process? An Analysis of Reddit Communities
  • Jan 1, 2017
  • Jeremy R Cole + 2 more

This study examines how novel words originate in and disperse through online communities. It asks whether larger numbers of people or closer social ties are better environments to foster the adoption of new words. The data stem from Reddit, a large sample of web-mediated, asynchronous conversations. Reddit communities are divided by size in this study: larger communities are based on discussing general topics and have weak social ties, whereas small communities are based on discussing specific topics and have strong social ties. The analysis shows that the majority of new words are created/first adopted in larger communities.

Cohesion Network Analysis for Predicting User Ranks in Reddit Communities
  • Sep 10, 2020
  • Catalin-Emil Fetoiu + 5 more

Social media consists of interactive applications which bring together people from different geographical regions through technology. Online communities have become increasingly popular due to their capabilities to virtually connect people with similar interests. Based on their activity, a social rank is computed to measure how users are perceived within the community. The aim of this paper is to perform an in-depth analysis of a debate community from Reddit. Our method provides tailored services capable to analyze user behavior based on regularity measures, model the interactions between participants, and predict a social rank for users based on their participation. The ReaderBench framework has been used to generate multiple indices, including those for textual complexity, reflective of writing style specificities. Various regression models were trained and evaluated in order to predict users’ rankings, which are reflected in the number of votes they receive from their peers. The results show that the user ranks are predicted with a precision of 15 votes by using MLP neural networks.

Within and Between-Person Differences in Language Used Across Anxiety Support and Neutral Reddit Communities
  • Jan 1, 2018
  • Molly Ireland + 1 more

Although many studies have distinguished between the social media language use of people who do and do not have a mental health condition, within-person context-sensitive comparisons (for example, analyzing individuals’ language use when seeking support or discussing neutral topics) are less common. Two dictionary-based analyses of Reddit communities compared (1) anxious individuals’ comments in anxiety support communities (e.g., /r/PanicParty) with the same users’ comments in neutral communities (e.g., /r/todayilearned), and, (2) within popular neutral communities, comments by members of anxiety subreddits with comments by other users. Each comparison yielded theory-consistent effects as well as unexpected results that suggest novel hypotheses to be tested in the future. Results have relevance for improving researchers’ and practitioners’ ability to unobtrusively assess anxiety symptoms in conversations that are not explicitly about mental health.

Vox Populi et Vox Regni:Investigating digital voice channels in the gig economy

Voice is crucial for workers as it enables them to better their organizations and exert some degree of control over managerial decision-making. Yet, as workers increasingly find jobs on digital platforms in the gig economy, traditional channels of voice are being replaced by digital voice channels, such as online communities. To add knowledge to voice on such channels, we collected conversation data from two comparable online communities, which function as official (Upwork community) and unofficial (Reddit community) digital voice channels for gig workers active on Upwork. Based on a comparative mixed-method approach combining sentiment analysis with a qualitative analysis of both communities, we draw out a process of how voice is organized in digital channels, taking into account design differences and identifying two distinctive online community voice behaviors, voice framing and voice modulation. Our study contributes to the growing research at the intersection of voice and digital platforms.

Vasectomy, Management, and Pain: A Natural Language Processing Analysis of Online Communities

ABSTRACTIs the use of vasectomy in the United Kingdom experiencing a significant decline due to knowledge of post‐vasectomy pain syndrome transmitted through online public forums? Although vasectomy is regularly used as a form of contraception and is generally considered to be safe, the frequency of use within the United Kingdom has fallen very significantly over the past few decades. The greatest risk of the surgery is arguably post‐vasectomy pain syndrome, and it is debated how frequent this outcome is, how men emotionally react to such pain—or anticipated pain related to vasectomy. This has implications for counselling men prior to surgery and management. We use public data from Reddit to analyse the perceptions of pain, the frequency of post‐vasectomy pain syndrome, and how such pain is resolved. We perform a systematic natural language processing assessment of the largest Reddit communities discussing vasectomy for the first time. We show that the dominant emotional reaction to vasectomy is that of fear—especially in relation to perceived or anticipated pain. Despite this, most men ultimately hold a positive sentiment about vasectomy, albeit at various levels of subjectivity. There are, however, a significant percentage of men who experience strong and negative emotions and experiences of vasectomy—including both the procedure and post‐vasectomy pain syndrome. We place a new upper limit on post‐vasectomy pain syndrome of 8% using 11 244 posts and estimate life‐affecting pain has an upper limit of 2%, with a similar rate of surgery regret. We show that reversal is the most frequently discussed solution to this pain by a factor of approximately 4 compared to other invasive methods. We suggest that any information and consent forms issued to prospective men no longer ethically describe vasectomy complications as “rare” or “very rare”. New onset pain is common for vasectomy. With such public discussion now firmly in place, we hypothesise that vasectomy will see further decreased use in the short term.

This is a very interesting paper that statistically depicts a common profile of society nowadays, where issues are discussed or denied without a logical basis for it. In this way, understanding the reasons of the refuse of new information and ways of dealing with this behavior can improve the dissemination of scientific knowledge among society. The present paper approaches this topic, focusing on a very important subject such as the climatic crises. So, in my opinion, it is an article worth publishing, either because of the main theme of the research, or because it is a concise and well-written article that not only identifies problems but also proposes solutions to solve them. I have just some suggestions to do, as follows:
