First Report of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus-Is (TYLCV-Is) in the Canary Islands.

In autumn of 1999 and winter-spring 2000, tomato (Lycopersicon) crops grown in the Regions of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Tenerife (Canary Islands) showed upward curling of leaves, yellowing of leaf margins, crumpling of new leaves, reduction of leaflet area, and stunting of shoots. These symptoms were similar to those described for tomato yellow leaf curl disease. Symptomatic samples were collected from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (33 samples) and Tenerife (45 samples) for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) identification analysis. The degenerate primers pair of Begomovirus (AV494/AC1048) (3) was used to amplify the "core" region of the capsid protein gene. Two tomato plants experimentally infected with Tomato yellow leaf curl virus-Is (TYLCVIs) or TYLCV-Sar served as positive controls. Electrophoretic analysis of all samples showed a single fragment of the expected size (550 bp). To identify the type of TYLCV (TYLCV-Sar or TYLCV-Is), the PCR products were digested by endonucleases (AluI, HaeIII, HpaII, RsaI, Sau3A, TaqI, DdeI, and ScrFI). Twenty-six samples from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria showed the same restriction pattern of TYLCV-Sar, and seven samples from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and all 45 samples from Tenerife showed the same restriction pattern of TYLCV-Is. These results confirm that TYLCV-Sar and TYLCV-Is are present in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and TYLCV-Is is present in Tenerife. The presence of TYLCV-Is in Morocco (2) and TYLCV-Sar in the Canary Islands and Morocco has been recently described (1). However, this is the first report of TYLCV-Is in the Canary Islands.

The spread of a non-native species in a new region depends on various factors, mainly its tolerance to environmental conditions in the new ecosystem. These environmental conditions, especially temperature, have a great influence on the reproductive capacity of these species, affecting the maturity process, spawning, and the survival of offspring. To verify the reproductive capacity of the introduced non-native species associated with the oil platforms, under the environmental conditions found in the Canary Islands, was performed the capture of individuals of non-indigenous species by volunteer observers (Scuba divers, professional and recreational fishermen) in the Port of Las Palmas, and in areas of the marine Net Natura 2000 of Gran Canaria and were examined histologically. The specimens examined belonged to families Acanthuridae: Acanthurus bahianus (Castelnau, 1855), Acanthurus chirurgus (Bloch, 1787) Acanthurus monroviae (Steindachner, 1876); Serranidea: Cephalopholis taeniops (Valenciennes, 1828), Paranthias furcifer (Valenciennes, 1828); Pomacentridae: Abudefduf hoefleri (Steindachner, 1881); and Pomacanthidae: Pomacanthus paru (Bloch, 1787). These species have their native distribution range in tropical or subtropical regions as Brazil or Gulf of Guinea. All individuals examined of alien species were sexually immature or inactive, indicating that these species, at the moment, are not able to spread and increase their populations in Gran Canaria waters, with the exception of Cephalopholis taeniops, a hermaphrodite species, which was the unique with developed gonads. Is survival from skin melanoma really improving? A retrospective cohort study in Gran Canaria Island (Spain).

Improved survival from skin melanoma has been reported in recent years.1 However, whether this survival improvement can be attributed to the emergence of new therapeutics or to a rise in the incidence of early forms of skin melanoma is controversial and unclear at the population level.2 The objective of this study was to assess the evolution of skin melanoma survival on a Spanish island with universal healthcare, allowing full geographic coverage,3 and to evaluate the potential causes for any changes if encountered. We conducted a multicentric retrospective cohort study in the two hospitals centralizing melanoma care in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain), reviewing the electronic records of patients diagnosed with skin melanoma between 2007 and 2018.4 Stage at diagnosis was updated to the 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer.5 To ensure a minimum follow-up time of 5 years, survival data was only calculated for patients diagnosed between 2007 and 2015. Vital status, information about any prescription of new therapies (targeted therapies or checkpoint inhibitors), and cause of death if applicable were checked for those patients. We obtained 5-year overall (OS) and melanoma-specific (MSS) survival rates with the Kaplan-Meier product-limit estimates of the survival function (Stata v16.0). We assessed the evolution of survival rates over time by means of the annual percentage change (APC) with Joinpoint Regression Program v4.9.0.1. Then, to assess whether differences in survival over time existed, we split the sample into two periods of the same length (2007–June 2011 vs. July 2011–2015 diagnoses), calculated survival rates stratified by stage at diagnosis, and evaluated whether differences in prescriptions of new therapeutics existed between periods with the chi-squared test. Finally, we assessed the evolution of skin melanoma incidence in the study period. For incidence calculations only invasive skin melanomas were included,6 and the mid-year census population for each year was used as denominator.7 Ethical clearance was obtained (CEI/CEIm-HUGCDN 2019-515-1). Between 2007 and 2015, 758 patients were diagnosed with invasive skin melanoma in Gran Canaria (Table 1). When analyzing crude data, survival improved in the study period, with 5-year MSS rates rising from 74.3% for patients diagnosed in 2007 (95% CI: 63.0%–82.6%) to 97.9% in 2015 (95% CI: 92.0%–99.5%), with an APC of +2.6% (p = 0.001). Similar results were obtained for OS (Figure 1a). However, when stratifying by stage at diagnosis, we did no longer find evidence of improved survival over time; all confidence intervals overlapped (Figure 1c, d). These figures also illustrate the excellent prognosis of stage I diagnosis, with 5-year survival rates close to 100%. After five years of follow-up, only 27 patients (3.6%) received new therapies (17 patients diagnosed in 2007–2011 vs. 10 in 2011–2015, representing 4.7% vs. 2.5%, respectively (p = 0.11)). For incidence calculations, data were available up to 2018. Between 2007 and 2018, 1,058 residents were diagnosed with melanoma, 55% of them with stage IA. Incidence increased by 2.4% per year in the study period (p = 0.03, Figure 1b). When stratifying by the earliest (IA) vs later stages (IB–IV), we found a steep APC for stage IA melanomas (+4.6%, p= 0.004), but no clear trend for more advanced stages, with an initial decline followed by an increase in recent years (Figure 1b). Survival from skin melanoma improved in Gran Canaria by more than 20% between 2007 and 2015. However, when stratifying by stage at diagnosis, we did not find evidence of improved survival over time (Figure 1c, d). Slightly better MSS point estimates for all stages were achieved in recent years (Figure 1c), which may have marginally contributed to improved survival, but not be detected due to the limited sample size of our study. New therapies cannot explain the survival improvement seen in Gran Canaria, as only 27 patients (3.6%) received them, with no differences between periods. This is different than results from other population-based studies,8 which found an impact of new therapies, and could be explained by the limited availability of those therapies in the years covered by the study. Meanwhile, the incidence rates of stage IA melanomas (of excellent prognosis) doubled, which did not happen with more advanced stages (Figure 1b). Massive sun exposure became popular in Spain in the 1970s and might partially explain this recent increase.9 Additionally, although skin cancer screening programs do not exist in Spain, the Spanish Academy of Dermatology (AEDV) has strived to promote public awareness and educational campaigns in the last two decades,10 which may have favored earlier diagnoses. Overall, our results support a survival improvement from skin melanoma at the population level in Gran Canaria for 2007–2015 diagnoses, mostly driven by a sustained increase in very early diagnoses. The recent rise in the incidence of advanced forms is of concern and will need to be addressed. Oil platforms as introduction vector of non-native marine fish species to the Canary Islands waters (central-eastern Atlantic).

This work documents the introduction of non-native fish species to the Canary Islands (central-eastern Atlantic) through oil rigs. Methodological approaches have included surveys by underwater visual censuses around and under oil platforms and along the docking area of rigs at the Port of Las Palmas. Eleven non-native fish species were registered. Paranthias furcifer, Abudefduf hoefleri, Acanthurus bahianus, Acanthurus chirurgus, and Acanthurus coeruleus are first recorded from the Canaries herein. Other three species could not be identified, although they have never been observed in the Canaries. Cephalopholis taeniops, Abudefduf saxatilis, and Acanthurus monroviae had been previously recorded. Native areas of these species coincide with the areas of origin and the scale of oil rigs with destination the Port of Las Palmas. The absence of native species in the censuses at rigs and their presence at rigs docking area, together with the observation of non-native species after the departure of platforms, reject the possibility that these non-native species were already present in the area introduced by another vector. C. taeniops, A. hoefleri, A. saxatilis, A. chirurgus, A. coeruleus and A. monroviae are clearly seafarer species. A. bahianus seems to be a potential seafarer species. P. furcifer is a castaway species. For themoment, the number of individuals of the non-native species in marine ecosystems of the Canaries seems to be low, and more investigation is needed for controlling these translocations.

Association between Saharan dust days and emergency hospital admissions in Canary Islands

Background The proximity of the Canary Islands to the Northwestern Coast of Morocco (100km) and the regional atmospheric circulation result in an ideal scenario for the transport of African dust from Sahara and Sahel regions towards Canary Islandas. This phenomenon is known as "Saharan dust intrusions". These intrusions can last for one or more days (episodes), reaching occasionally daily average levels higher than 600 ?g/m3 of PM10 and 250 of PM2.5. Aims The aim of this study was to analyze in detail the short-term association between days with Saharan dust intrusions (Saharan dust days, SDD) and morbidity in the cities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (LPGC) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (SCTF) Methods From 2001 to 2005 the association between SDD and daily emergency hospital admissions for respiratory and circulatory diseases was examined using Generalized Additive models adjusting for potential confounders. The effect of concurrent SDD and polynomial distributed lag models [PDLM]) were assessed. Two main types of Saharan dust intrusions over the islands (low and high altitude atmospheric intrusions) were also studied separately Results The number of episodes were 133 in LPGC and 142 in SCTF (561 and 591 SDD respectively). A SDD associated with a 22.6% increase (95% CI 10.4, 36.0) and 29.9% (6.6, 58.4) in risk of all respiratory and COPD admissions respectively in SCTF during the concurrent and the 5 consecutive days. Low altitude atmospheric dust days significantly associated with all respiratory 12.0% (2.7, 22.4) and COPD, 22.7% (4.7, 43.8) in SCTF and with asthma in LPGC: 31.3% (0.9, 70.8). Conclusions We found a short term impact of SDD on emergency hospital admissions for respiratory diseases in both cities that spread over several successive days and that are higher in low altitude atmospheric intrusions. Preventive actions and preparedness plans must be developed for public health protection from these natural events.

Packard1 and May Gómez Cabrera1 1 University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain Starvation has a major impact on physiological processes in marine plankton and these processes have a major impact on the energy transfer through marine ecosystems. However, quantifying and understanding how starvation changes different aspects of the energy transfer has been retarded because planktologists have largely relied on biomass fractionation to shed light on it. Here, we experiment with the cellular energy allocation approach (CEA index), the respiratory electron transport system activity (ETS), and organic analysis of lipids (Lip), carbohydrates (Carb) and proteins (Prot) to help further our understanding of the energy transfer in the caridean shrimp, Palaemon elegans. We analyzed the effect of 72 hours of starvation using the CEA index that is calculated as the ratio between energy available to energy consumption. It allows us to evaluate the net energy budget (Verslycke and Janssen, 2002). The energy available (Ea) was determined from Lip, Carb, and Prot content, where Ea = Lip + Carb + Prot. Energy consumption (Ec) was calculated from the activity of ETS. All the parameters were transformed into energy equivalents using their respective energy of combustion (Gnaiger, 1983). Proteins were the main energy source (1450.8±355.7 mJ•mgWW-1), followed by lipids (727.2±124.4 mJ•mgWW-1) and carbohydrates (82.1±17.9 mJ•mgWW-1). After 24 hours of starvation, the carbohydrates dropped by 38.2%, a significant decrease. After 48 hours, the proteins had decreased by 36.0%. The lipids were the last to decrease. After 72 hours they had dropped by 42.3%. Adding these organic constituents to calculate the Ea revealed a significant decreasing trend of 34.42% at 72 hours (from 2260.1±485.5 to 1482.3±120.9 mJ•mgWW-1). In contrast, the Ec, as ETS activity, showed a significant increase at 24 hours (from 85.2±16.6 to 158.0±40.4 mJ•h-1•mgWW-1) that stabilized after 72 hours. Overall, the energy balance (Ea/Ec) showed that the energy available was higher than the energy consumption during the experiment. Ea/Ec ratio decreased for the first 24 hours, then remained stable for the next 48 hours. This portrait of energy regulation shows a rapid shift mechanism of P. elegans under sudden adverse conditions. References Gnaiger, E. Urban geotourism in the historic center of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain)

Urban geoturism is a relatively recent type of tourism that has increased a lot in recent years. The elaboration of geotouristic trails is the main way to develop this type of tourism in cities. Urban geotourism aims at exploiting the cultural heritage (churches, hermitages, cemeteries, houses, squares, streets, etc.) and the urban layout itself. But too the geographical and natural elements (volcanoes, ravines, cliffs, beaches, dunes, etc.) that have not been wiped out by the urban growth and transformation processes. In this study we have chosen the old centre of las Palmas de Gran Canaria (LPGC) in Gran Canaria. The Canary Islands are an active volcanic region located in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, about 100 km off the west coast of Africa and at a subtropical latitude. The choice of the city of LPGC is due to the fact that it is the main city of the Canary Islands (378.675 inhabitants) and has one of the oldest, largest and best preserved centers in the Canary Island. The aim of this work is to propose an urban geotourism itinerary through the historical centre of Vegueta and Triana neighbourhoods in LPGC city (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain). The methodology will consist of identifying, selecting and characterizing different geomorphosites in the city (cliffs, beaches, fossil dunes) and describing the main types of stone used for the construction and ornamentation of buildings from the foundation of the city in the 15th century to the present day. Based on the variety of resources identified and inventoried, we have proposed a geographical urban geotourism itinerary to satisfy and diversify the tourist offer of the city, which consists of 24 points distributed between the historic neighborhoods of Triana and Vegueta, in which elements of the volcanic heritage of the island and/or that present important natural and cultural value linked mainly to religious (10) and civil (15) heritage. This proposed route is of low difficulty and can be done in two hours. The material identified mainly in elements of the facades of the buildings is gray, white, and green ignimbrite and scoria volcanic rocks. Part of this material comes from the Tirma, Teror and Galdar quarries. Elements of sandstone, limestone, pumice, organogenic sand, boulders, red scoria were also identified, as well as structures with the presence of sandstone as cement. (Volturmac-MAC2/4.6c/298).
