Abstract
The history of the formation of the English nation state in the period 900-1050 presents a remarkable case-study of the making of a country and a people. This article analyses the elements - including regnal power, ethnic mythology and the invention of names - which made this process possible. By 1100 England's identity was shaped and defined; but it was an identity which also made it impossible for England to forge an effective relationship with the other countries and peoples of the British Isles.
