Abstract

The paper deals with migrant entrepreneurship in the Marche Region, a topic still neglected in the current literature. The present research intends to investigate deeply the subject in the years 2000-2010 and to describe its size, features, spatial distribution and structure of proveniences. Such analysis permits to individuate specific patterns of social integration of foreign people in the area and to reflect about determinants, forms, past and present evolution of the phenomenon. The results show a still young and small presence; anyway there are interesting signals of growth and of a gradual insertion in national tissue. There emerges a very heterogeneous universe, with little shops (essentially a refuge from marginality and unemployment), restaurants (opportunity to exploit their different, always exotic, culture and tradition), and firms that compete with natives in the open market or that are strictly connected with the local productive system. The contemporaneous presence of different situations marks a difference with other European and Italian experiences. Migrant entrepreneurship in the region is a complex and interesting phenomenon, which swings between integration and marginality.
