Abstract

The work published in 1575 by a Spanish doctor, Juan Huarte of San Juan (1529–1530 ?–1580) entitled Examen de ingenios para las sciencias... had a considerable impact on the intelligensia throughout Europe at that time. Over thirty editions of the book, translated into the major European languages, have appeared since it was first published. The three French translations of the first Spanish editions, i.e. the original version and the posthumous censored version of 1594 where several chapters had to be deleted by order of the Inquisition, for three centuries were a focus for debate concerning “an examination of the natural dispositions of the mind”. With the recent rediscovery in France and Spain of this essential book on humanistic thought, it can be qualified as a landmark in the history of ideas that introduces a new anthropology.
