The film Sore: Istri dari Masa Depan tells the story of a woman named Sore, the wife of a man named Jo, who travels back into Jo’s past with the intention of improving his life. This study seeks to analyze the contradictions in marital relationships as represented in the film through Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic analysis and Baxter and Montgomery’s relational dialectics theory. The research focuses on how Sore’s efforts to transform Jo into a “better” person create tensions with Jo’s desire to preserve his personal freedom. The novelty of this study lies in combining Saussure’s semiotic framework with relational dialectics theory, providing a more comprehensive understanding of relational dynamics as represented in film. The findings reveal that semiotic analysis uncovers signs and meanings in several key scenes, including the imposition of lifestyle changes, negotiations over smoking and alcohol consumption, and the eventual realization of acceptance within the relationship. Furthermore, the resolution of relational tensions is achieved through segmentation and integration strategies, which serve as the main approaches to managing contradictions via neutralization, reframing, and disqualification.

Semiotics refers to an analytical discipline concerned with understanding the mechanisms through which signs function and generate meaning. This study examines Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, which expands upon the fundamental concepts introduced by Ferdinand de Saussure, aiming to extend the application of sign analysis to broader cultural and communicative contexts. This semiotic research seeks to analyze the symbolic meanings within the anime One-Piece among Indonesia’s Generation Z, focusing on their critical stance toward governmental arbitrariness. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach and a constructivist paradigm through Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, this study explores symbols such as the Straw Hat, Jolly Roger, Will of D, and Grand Line. The findings reveal that these symbols are not merely fictional elements but serve as representations of solidarity, courage, and resistance against corruption, parliamentary allowance increases, mass layoffs, and unjust tax burdens. Generation Z uses One-Piece symbols as expressions of political resistance, both in public demonstrations and through digital culture, establishing a new resistance narrative that reaffirms their role as agents of socio-political change. Keywords: One Piece, Generation Z, Semiotics, Roland Barthes, Solidarity, Political Resistance

Relational Dialectics Theory
  • Sep 13, 2017
  • Elizabeth A Suter + 1 more

Relational dialectics theory (RDT) is a dialogic theory of interpersonal and family communication. RDT is grounded in the work of Russian cultural theorist Mikhail Bakhtin. Extending Bakhtin's theory of dialogism, RDT offers a relationally oriented dialogic theory grounded in a skepticism of monologue. RDT recognizes the monologic potential inherent within family communication; however, RDT critiques these monologic tendencies, favoring instead a dialogic sense in which a cacophony of multiple perspectives struggles to be heard as the family makes—and remakes—meaning. This chapter discusses foundational RDT concepts, including the utterance, the utterance chain, the centripetal-centrifugal struggle of competing discourses, unfinalizability, and the continuum of interplay. The concept of the utterance chain concretizes Bakhin's central argument that utterances do not exist in isolation; rather, utterances are always in dialogue with both prior and anticipated future utterances. To continue the conversation, the chapter suggests that scholars make more productive use of the proximal sites on the utterance chain.

Kristina M. Scharp and Lindsey J. Thomas provide an overview of relational dialectics theory (RDT), paying particular attention to the shift from RDT’s earliest articulation to its now critically-inflected rearticulation and corresponding method, contrapuntal analysis. After describing the theory’s growth, the authors present RDT’s foundational premises and their importance to the congruous steps of contrapuntal analysis. The emphasis on contrapuntal analysis reflects RDT’s shift from product to process. The authors then provide an overview of interpersonal communication studies that employ RDT. The authors end by evaluating RDT and offer implications for future RDT-based research.

  • Lindsey J Thomas + 1 more

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Journal of Family Communication (JFC), the present essay celebrates two and a half decades of relational dialectics theory (RDT) in JFC, highlighting the reciprocal relationship between theory and journal. The authors, both of whom have a breadth of experience in conducting RDT research, first provide a history of RDT and an overview of key terms and assumptions. The essay then traces the history of RDT through the first 25 volumes of JFC. A review of the RDT-based original research articles in JFC turns an eye toward the family communication contexts that have – and have not – been studied. The authors conclude by turning to possible future RDT endeavors and providing suggestions for those who are, or are interested in, conducting research based on RDT.

Relational Dialectics Theory

Relational dialectics theory (RDT) is a postmodern critical theory of meaning. Based on the writing of Russian philosopher, RDT attunes researchers to the ways that discourses (i.e., ideologies) compete to make meaning of particular semantic objects (e.g., identities, phenomena, processes, etc.). Of note, not all discourses hold the same amount of power. Some discourses are dominant (i.e., centripetal) whereas others are marginalized (i.e., centrifugal). RDT researchers, then, are primarily interested in exploring how these discourses, with unequal power, compete. This focus on the competition of discourses for power and the ability of RDT to call out the ideological forces that disenfranchise some groups while enfranchising others holds promise for practical applications such as debunking misconceptions and better understanding where privilege comes from and how it is perpetuated. When discourses compete, they might do so within or across a set of utterances. Utterances are turns in talk and serve as the primary unit of analysis in RDT research. Utterances, however, are not standalone entities. Rather, they are connected by different links to form an utterance chain. Some links of the utterance chain pertain to time (what has been said before and what response an utterance can anticipate) whereas the other links of the utterance chain pertain to the relationship level (some pertain to the culture at large whereas other only to an idiosyncratic relationship). Overall, discursive competition takes place across a continuum of interplay. At one end of the continuum is monologue. Monologue represents the absence of meaning. Next are discursive enactments (i.e., closure) that reinforce the dominant discourse and shut down alternatives (see entry for complete list). Diachronic separation occurs when the dominance of a discourse changes across time. Diachronic separation can take two forms: (a) spiraling inversion or (b) segmentation. Synchronic interplay is next and occurs when two discourses compete within a given utterance. When RDT researchers examine a text for synchronic interplay, they often look to see how a marginalized discourse (a) negates, (b) counters, or (c) entertains the dominant discourse. Finally, on the other end of the continuum of interplay, is dialogic transformation. Dialogic transformation occurs through either (a) discursive hybridity or (b) an aesthetic moment whereby discourses suspend their interplay to create new meanings. Conducted using RDT’s corresponding method, contrapuntal analysis, researchers using this theory work to disrupt hegemonic, taken-for-granted assumptions about how things are and call attention to voices overlooked in the past. To date, this theory has been taken up primarily by family, interpersonal, and health communication scholars, although many scholars have used this theory throughout the discipline.

Sinetron (Indonesian Soap opera) are a medium that functions to convey messages in audio-visual form. As an information medium, sinetron (Indonesian soap operas) can be said to be the most effective medium in conveying messages containing da'wah to the public. One of the Sinetron (Indonesian Soap opera) that can convey messages containing da'wah is the sinetron (Indonesian soap opera) "Para Pencari God Volume 14" which not only provides education but also preaching messages to its viewers. The interesting thing about this sinetron (Indonesian Soap opera) is that it dares to raise issues that are considered current, such as current conditions. Therefore, the author is interested in researching a s Sinetron (Indonesian Soap opera) entitled "Para Pencari tuhan jilid 14" by Citra Cinema regarding the preaching message contained in each scene, then interpreted using Ferdinand De Sausssure's semiotic analysis method. Based on the background above, the research question posed by the author is: what is the meaning of the preaching message of commendable morals towards fellow humans in the semiotic analysis of Ferdinand De Saussure in the Sinetron (Indonesian Soap opera) Para Pencari tuhan jilid 14. The aim of this research is: to find out the meaning of the preaching message contained in the Sinetron (Indonesian Soap opera) "Para Pencari tuhan jilid 14" uses Ferdinand De Saussure's semiotic analysis. This research was conducted using qualitative research with a semiotic analysis approach. The data sources used in this research are primary data, namely the video of the Sinetron (Indonesian Soap opera) “Para Pencari tuhan jilid 14” which was uploaded on YouTube and secondary data in the form of photos, documents, articles, journals and books. Data collection techniques were carried out using non-participant observation and documentation. The data analysis technique used is Ferdinand De Saussure's semiotic model which interprets the meaning of signifier (signifier) and signified (signified). Based on the results of the analysis and discussion, the author concludes that the meaning of the da'wah message contained in the Sinetron (Indonesian Soap opera) “Para pencari tuhan jilid 14” in Ferdinand De Saussure's analysis is 1) giving help, 2) giving advice, 3) saying and answering greetings, 4) saying the truth, 5 ) keeping the mandate, 6) keeping one's gaze, 7) inviting good things, 8) forgiving and forgiving each other, 9) smiling when they meet, and 10) holding back anger.

Film as a form of mass communication has a very important role in conveying messages to a wide audience. As a visual medium, film is able to combine audio and visual elements and through narrative, characters and visualization, film can create social or cultural representations and can influence people's opinions or behavior. In this research, the film being studied is entitled "Susah Signal", this film is researched with the aim that the audience can better understand and see how communication styles can damage and also improve the relationship between mother and child in the family. This research uses mass communication theory, interpersonal communication, family communication and semiotic theory. The methodology used in this film is a qualitative approach using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic case study method in processing the collection of existing data. In Semiotic Theory according to Ferdinand de Saussure, he has the main concepts developed, namely Signifier and Signified. Researchers processed data from several scenes in the film "Susah Signal" and then carried out the data validity process by interviewing a psychologist lecturer named Debora Basaria, Msi.Psi, Psychologist. The results of this research show that the film Susah Signal represents the communication style of a single mother, from initially having a communication style that tends to be one-way, such as her authoritarian parenting style, which is also quite harsh in reprimanding, so it often becomes the cause of conflict, to the stage of representing a change in communication style. Good behavior can be the key to resolving the conflict in this film.

This study examines the semiotics of Ferdinand de Saussure, namely the signifier and the signified in a collection of songs by Mahalini Raharja. Many researches on the semiotics of Ferdinand de Saussure in song lyrics have been carried out. However, in a collection of songs by Mahalini Raharja with the titles of the songs Perfect Story, Rest of Taste, Against Restu, and Bring Him Back, it has never been studied from the semiotic aspect of Ferdinand de Saussure. The problem examined in this study is: how is Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotics, namely the signifier and signified in a collection of songs by Mahalini Raharja? The purpose of this study is to describe, analyze, and interpret Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotics, namely the markers and signifiers in a collection of songs by Mahalini Raharya. The approach used is qualitative with content analysis method. Data collection techniques are non-participant observation techniques and literature study. In this study, the researcher made an interpretation by dividing the lyrics of a song by Mahalini Raharja into several lines and then the data included would be analyzed using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory. The results of the research and the amount of data on Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotics in the collection of Mahalini Raharja's songs amounted to 28 data.

Relational Dialectics Theory
  • Sep 29, 2022

  • Kristina M Scharp + 1 more

Relational dialectics theory (RDT) is a dialogic theory of meaning‐making. The primary premise of RDT is that meanings are made in the competition of discourses or what Baxter refers to as “systems of meaning.” Fundamental to RDT is the recognition that not all discourses are afforded the same levels of power. Whereas some discourses are dominant in a culture (i.e., centripetal), others are more marginalized (i.e., centrifugal). In this entry, we (i) provide a history of the theory, (ii) define the key premise and key concepts of RDT, (iii) highlight the process of meaning‐making by introducing RDT's corresponding method, contrapuntal analysis, (iv) discuss some applications of RDT in health contexts, and (v) provide a case study to illustrate the theory in action.

Extending Relational Dialectics Theory: Exploring New Avenues of Research

  • Danielle Halliwell

Over the years, relational dialectics theory (RDT) has emerged as a prominent theory in the Communication field. Applied primarily in interpersonal and family contexts, RDT has generated valuable insights into the communicative challenges that characterize relational life. However, despite the impressive body of RDT-informed research, researchers have yet to tap into the theory’s full potential. To fully utilize RDT’s core premises, I argue that communication researchers must take on two research “tasks”: (a) expand their methods of data collection; and (b) respect conceptual complexity. Addressing these tasks will enhance the theory and extend important knowledge about interpersonal and family communication.

Charting a Research Agenda for Relational Dialectics Theory: Forwarding Critical Theorizing in Interpersonal and Family Communication Research

In 2011, Leslie Baxter published Voicing Relationships: A Dialogic Perspective, updating the 1996 articulation of relational dialectics theory (RDT). Baxter provided clarity on concepts introduced 15 years prior. Organized around RDT’s central premise – that the meaning of phenomena transpires in the moment through struggles of competing discourses – Baxter positioned RDT within the critical postmodern project. Since then, RDT research has proliferated, but no systematic assessment of its theoretical characteristics has transpired. We conducted a prescriptive review of the first decade of research following the 2011 volume. We first identified sources citing Baxter’s (2011) volume (n = 505), ultimately narrowing to studies using RDT with its companion method, contrapuntal analysis (n = 55). We then coded for six constructs (genre, utterance, utterance chain location, speaker, addressee, and semantic object). This article presents our selection criteria and processes of review, findings, and research agenda based on our review.

Signifying unity: exploring the interplay of semiotics, universalism and pluralism in information science
  • Mar 12, 2024
  • Journal of Documentation
  • Martin Muderspach Thellefsen

PurposeThe purpose of this study is twofold: first, to provide a nuanced understanding of the information concept that encapsulates both its universal foundations and context-dependent intricacies, and second, to propose a theoretical framework that integrates these diverse viewpoints, thereby contributing to the theoretical discourse and practical applications in information science/studies (IS).Design/methodology/approachThe aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between universalism and pluralism in connection with semiotics. The paper adopts a conceptual approach based on semiotics to address the long-standing debate over the definition of information in IS. By engaging with two foundational semiotic theories—C.S. Peirce's pragmatic semiotics and Ferdinand de Saussure's structuralist semiotics – the research seeks to bridge the conflicting perspectives of universalism and pluralism within the field.FindingsThe findings reveal that Peirce's semiotics, with its universalist core, views information as dynamic and shaped by context, while Saussure's approach, which is rooted in linguistics, emphasizes the relational aspects of sign systems and connects them to pluralism. This comparative analysis facilitates a broad understanding of information that transcends the limitations of singular perspectives. In conclusion, the paper seeks to demonstrate that the integration of universalist and pluralist perspectives through semiotics offers a more holistic approach to the study of information in IS. It contributes to the field by suggesting that the tension between these perspectives is not only reconcilable but also essential for a richer and more complete understanding of information. This theoretical foundation paves the way for future research and practical advancements in IS and advocates for approaches that recognize the complexity and multifaceted nature of information.Research limitations/implicationsThe study engages with theoretical frameworks, predominantly semiotic theories by C.S. Peirce and Ferdinand de Saussure. While this provides a deep conceptual understanding, the lack of empirical data may limit the practical applicability of the findings. The research focuses on two semiotic perspectives, which, although foundational, do not represent the entirety of semiotics or information theory. Other significant semiotic theories and perspectives could provide alternative or complementary insights. The concepts of universalism and pluralism in information science are highly intricate and multifaceted. This study's approach to synthesizing these concepts, while comprehensive, might oversimplify some aspects of these complex paradigms.Originality/valueThe paper's originality lies in its unique integration of semiotic theories into the discourse of IS. This integration offers a novel perspective on understanding the concept of information, bridging the gap between universalist and pluralist approaches. The study presents a new conceptual framework for understanding information that combines elements of universalism (consistent, objective understanding of information) and pluralism (context-dependent, subjective interpretations). This dual approach is relatively unexplored in IS literature, providing fresh insights into the complex nature of information.

Abstract
In this study, the researcher analyzes the semiotics study of a movie entitled The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, in which the movie has markers that can be used for this method. The research method chosen by the author is qualitative. The data analysis that has been chosen by the author is The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie; used as the object of analysis. To analyze the study of semiotics, the researcher decided to choose the theory of Ferdinand de Saussure, the theory of semiotics related to signifier- signified. With Ferdinand de Saussure's theory, the researcher finds scenes that contain the Semiotics of the signifier-signified in them. In the movie, the researcher can analyze Ferdinand de Saussure's theory of Semiotics visually. In addition, the researcher can find the Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotics only 7 scenes.
