Abstract

As a key technology of the digital transformation, artificial intelligence has become part of our everyday lives. The AI-related effects on life and work have enormous social relevance and must therefore be addressed at the political level. This research work focusses on the discourse around AI useage in the German Bundestag – as the central location of debate in the democratic system – from the first mention of the term in 1984 to the establishment of the Enquete Commission in 2018, leading up to a critical discourse analysis. The year 2016 emerged as a turning point in the parliamentary discourse, which negotiates the political handling of the enormous potentials and risks of this technology.
