The need for clothing continues to increase in line with the number ofhpopulation. Meeting clothing needs is linked to the existence of garment companies and industries that produce clothing. Small industries play a crucial role in driving economic growth, such as providing employment opportunities. One small industry operating in the garment sector is the Troso Ikat Weaving Small Industry. In the weaving production process, there are three production flows starting from input, process, and output. This study aims to determine the knowledge of the millennial generation in the weaving industry activities in Troso Village, Pecangaan District, Jepara Regency. This study uses a quantitative approach. The population in this study was 428 and the sample size was 90 millennial ikat weaving artisans. The sample collection method used was proportional area random sampling. The variable in this study was the level of knowledge of weaving artisans. The level of knowledge of weaving artisans in Troso Village is included in the high category of 78.89%. The high level of knowledge of small ikat weaving industry artisans is influenced by their level of education, age, and experience. A Structural Model for Assessing the Factors Influencing the Demand and Supply of Skills in the Garment Industry of Bangladesh
  • Jun 30, 2025
  • Journal of Business and Econometrics Studies
  • Md Sharif Hossain

Purpose: It is essential to formulate and implement different policy frameworks for skills development in Bangladesh's garment sector, which may play an important role in Bangladesh’s economic growth and sustainable development. That is why, in this study, the principal purpose has been made to formulate and estimate a structural model to identify the determinants of demand and supply of skills in the garment sector of Bangladesh to assess the needs of skilled workers in this sector as well as to find out the capacity of the training providers to bring out skilled graduates which may play an important role to formulate policies for sustainable development of the garment sector of Bangladesh. Design/methodology/approach: This study is based on primary data. Primary information on different variables is collected using a structured questionnaire from 130 garment workers in four big cities: Chattogram, Dhaka, Gazipur, and Narayanganj. Stratified random sampling is used to collect the sample observations, considering each city as a stratum, and a part of the sample is drawn at random from each city. We select respondents from the client's list of beneficiaries through simple random sampling. Advanced-level econometric techniques are used to provide a lucid analysis. Findings: From the χ2 -test results it is found that different pairs of attributes, such as skills and wages, skills and education level, and skills and required quality, are associated in the garment sector of Bangladesh. From the final estimates based on the two-stage least squares method of the demand and supply functions of skills of the structural model, it is found that the effects of the variables, education level of the employees, yearly sales revenue of the factories, and the total investment of the factories have significant positive impact, on the demand of skills and the variables monthly cost of living of the workers has statistically significant positive effects and the variable wage rate of the competitive sector hurts the supply of skills in the garment sector of Bangladesh Originality/value: To the best of my knowledge, this study is a unique attempt to formulate and estimate a structural model of the demand and supply of skills in the garment sector of Bangladesh to assess the needs of skilled workers in this sector based on the primary data of several variables. Conclusions: In this paper, a structural model is developed to assess the factors influencing the demand and supply of skills in Bangladesh’s garment industry. This model can be used to formulate and implement different policy frameworks for skills development in Bangladesh’s garment industry. Policies should be formulated based on the estimated results of the structural model. From the estimated results it is found that the variables, education level, expenditure for training programs, sales revenue and total investment play a significant positive role in the demand for skills in the garment sector of Bangladesh, therefore emphasis should be given to creating literate skilled workers, considering more expenditure for training programs, more investment in the garment sector, and the government and other stakeholders have to develop policy-frameworks to earn more sales revenue as a result the demand for skilled workers will increase. Since the variable wage rate of the competitive sectors plays a significant negative role in the supply of skills. Therefore, the government, including other stakeholders, have to take necessary measures to increase the wage rate of the garment sector of Bangladesh as a policy framework for the sustainable development of the garment sector; otherwise would be very difficult to find quality workers in the garment sector. As a result, the production function will be running as a decreasing return to scale for a long period. Therefore, it may work as a barrier to the development of the garment sector as well as for the national economy, and in future, this sector may happen like the Jute industry of Bangladesh.

Application of Human Rights Due Diligence and the LeanIn Concept for Addressing Pregnancy-Related Discrimination in Cambodia’s Garment Sector
  • Sep 13, 2018
  • Bai Li + 1 more

Workers in Cambodian garment factories often suffer from human rights and labor abuse issues. The gender income disparities were growing in most Asian developing countries over the past years (OECD in OECD due diligence guidance for responsible supply chains in the garment and footwear sector, 2017)and pregnancy-related human rights issues appear to have received little attention. Most female workers in Cambodian garment factories lack awareness to resist abuses and struggle against human rights issues. This paper considers how companies can implement the due diligence recommendations for responsible supply chains in the garment and footwear sector. We draw on guidance from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to propose ways to address pregnancy-related human rights and labor abuse issues for female workers in Cambodia’s garment industry. Also, we offer some suggestions related to LeanIn.org that could help raise worker awareness of the issues. For Cambodia, to stay at the forefront of the promise of improved human rights in the garment industry, it is vital for them to solve the pregnancy-related human rights and labor abuse issues.

Returns to different levels of education in Russia
  • Apr 2, 2024
  • Journal of Economic Studies
  • Sofiia Dolgikh + 1 more

PurposeEducation system stimulates the development of human capital and provides informative signaling allowing to differentiate productivity of individuals. If education system is efficient then higher levels of education usually associated with greater returns on labor market. To evaluate the efficiency of Russian education system we aim to estimate the effect of vocational education and different levels of higher education on wages.Design/methodology/approachWe use data on 8,764 individuals in the years 2019–2021. Our statistical approach addresses two critical issues: nonrandom selection into employment and the endogeneity of education choice. To tackle these problems, we employed Heckman’s method and its extension that is a structural model which addresses the issue of self-selection into different levels of education.FindingsThe results of the analysis suggest that there is a significant heterogeneity in the returns to different levels of education. First, higher education, in general, offers substantial wage premiums when compared to vocational education. Specifically, individuals with specialist’s and bachelor’s degrees enjoy higher wage premiums of approximately 23.59–24.04% and 16.43–16.49%, respectively, compared to those with vocational education. Furthermore, we observe a significant dis-parity in returns among the various levels of higher education. Master’s degree provides a substantial wage premium in comparison to both bachelor’s (19.79–20.96%) and specialist’s (12.64–13.41%) degrees. Moreover, specialist degree offers a 7.16–7.55% higher wage premium than bachelor’s degree.Practical implicationsWe identify a hierarchical pattern in the returns associated with different levels of higher education in Russia, specifically “bachelor-specialist-master.” These findings indicate that each level of education in Russia serves as a distinct signal in the labor market, facilitating employers' ability to differentiate between workers. From a policy perspective, our results suggest the potential benefits of offering opportunities to transition from specialist’s to master’s degrees on a tuition-free basis. Such a policy may enhance access to advanced education and potentially lead to higher returns for individuals in the labor market.Originality/valueThere are many studies on returns to higher education in Russia. However, just few of them estimate the returns to different levels of higher education. Also, these studies usually do not address the issue of the endogeneity arising because of self-selection into different levels of education. Our structural econometric model allows addressing for this issue and provides consistent estimates of returns to different levels of education under the assumption that individuals with higher propensity to education obtain higher levels of education.
