Abstract

Aside from their economic power, the great industrial corporations have a significant role in the creation and application of technical knowledge. Because of their power and the fact that most scientists and engineers work in private industry, these organizations have had substantial influence over problem definition and policy-formation related to a variety of critical issues. Few would disagree with the statement that knowledge shapes policy. Accordingly, whatever group controls the creation and distribution of knowledge in a society heavily influences policymaking and the general direction of social change and development. We discuss two problems: (1) The processes related to the development and application of knowledge in advanced societies which have been strongly influenced by giant corporations.
