Abstract

The impact of COVID‐19 on the college athletics landscape has been significant. With some exceptions, spring and fall sports seasons were canceled, many corporate partnerships remain on hold, and revenues from numerous sources declined. Yet, each institution was and still is confronted with the need to meet ongoing financial obligations to its coaches, staff members, and student‐athletes, along with payments associated with the construction of or ongoing renovations to various facilities. In short, the pool of money available to meet all of these continuing requirements suddenly and precipitously shrank. Few institutions were prepared for the magnitude of the financial impact given the unexpected nature of the pandemic.
