Abstract
Previous studies of secrecy in Kleist’s work have concentrated largely upon the theological and epistemological dimensions of the secret. This essay argues instead for a poetics of secrecy in Kleist, by means of which he rethinks the relationship between time, event and information. As proof, the article reconstructs the informational economy and intersubjective calculus of Die Marquise von O.... with an eye toward the temporal distortions and strategic behavior that secrecy both enables and provokes. Of particular significance for this reading of the Marquise von O.... are: a) Kleist’s theory of time axis manipulation, developed in his »Lehrbuch der franzosischen Journalistik«, b) the medial logic of the Intelligenzblatt, and c) the tactical innovations of the Second Coalition War.
