Abstract

AS A by-product of the production of corn for grain, more than 12,000 tons of corn cobs are produced annually in Sussex County, Delaware. The major economic use for these cobs is as litter in broiler houses. For a number of years corn cobs have been considered satisfactory and many farmers preferred them to other kinds of litter.Increased competition from other broiler producing areas has resulted in a greater emphasis on quality in the Delmarva area. Some of the buyers concluded that the use of corn cob litter resulted in more breast blisters on broilers. Few, if any, tests were conducted to verify the accuracy of this conclusion. One or two buyers were reported to have offered less for broilers grown on corn cob litter and in some cases they refused to bid on these flocks.
