Abstract

The Kelvin–Helmholtz instability is examined for magnetized plasmas where the effective ion Larmor radius, u/ωci, is larger than the velocity shear scale (u is the flow speed and ωci is the ion gyrofrequency). In this parameter regime, the properties of the instability are modified as compared with the small Larmor radius case and a new short wavelength branch is introduced. The instability properties and some applications are discussed.
